Modern science is not yet able to prevent the progression of Alzheimer’s syndrome, but recently, scientists have voiced a new technique that can slow down the processes that contribute to the development of neurodegenerative disease. For this, acetylsalicylic acid, that is, the well-known aspirin, is used. According to the study, thanks to aspirin, the activity of lysosomes in cells is enhanced. These are cellular organelles that contain many enzymes and, among other things, break down plaques of amyloid beta. This protein is just recognized as the main element that stimulates the development of Alzheimer’s disease. To study how aspirin works, researchers used the genetic line of 5XFAD laboratory mice. Behind them is a tendency to the accelerated appearance of beta-amyloid. And as a result – the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Rodents were given moderate doses of aspirin for a month. After which, scientists noted that the drug activated the PPARα receptor. The latter takes part in the normalization of metabolism and differentiation of cells in the body. Among other things, PPARα changes the amount of TFEB protein, which promotes the appearance of new lysosomes. Lysosomes are responsible for cleansing tissues of dangerous substances, in particular proteins, which include amyloid beta. The researchers studied not only the response of cells to the fact that aspirin enters the bloodstream. They tested the response to direct drug administration. In each case, the concentration of amyloid decreased and the volume of lysosomes increased. As the experts found out, during the studies, there are no extra side effects from small doses of aspirin, in addition to the already known ones. They suggest that in a similar way they can affect Alzheimer’s disease and other drugs that have a mechanism of action similar to aspirin.
