A team of engineers from Facebook finalized an unmanned 43-meter device called Aquila, which is able to distribute the Internet in remote corners of the Earth from an altitude of 18–27 km above the surface.
Depending on the terrain, the drone can circle for 90 days. The device will be launched into the sky with the help of balloons, which will raise it to a given height. The weight of Aquila is considerable – almost 400 kg. Keeping the device in the air will help solar panels.
The drone will transmit the Internet connection using a laser developed by the Facebook team. He is currently undergoing laboratory tests and demonstrates a data transfer rate of 10 Gb / s. From a distance of 16 km, the laser can accurately hit a coin-sized receiver.
