Google’s successor in the development of unmanned vehicles, Waymo has launched a series of tests on common roads in Arizona. The developer abandoned the understudies, test drivers in the first seats, however, for safety reasons, engineers are sitting in the back seats. If necessary, they can press a button and the car will park at the curb. Everyone is invited to take part in trips. Passengers themselves choose a route: to school, to work, for shopping. The company showed how such autonomous trips go in the video it shot. Via GIPHY The test area is limited and so far is 260 km² (one hundred square miles). In general, many corporations, including Audi, Toyota and Tesla, as well as Google, NVIDIA, are engaged in relevant developments and have achieved some success in recent years. However, no one is ready to give up insurance in the face of the driver. Waymo also considered that often a driver in a car with an autopilot is not focused on the traffic situation, he is distracted by other things, misses, loses his vigilance or completely switches his attention to a mobile gadget, for example, a smartphone. As a result, at a crucial moment, when a person could make the right decision, taking control of the transport and taking the right maneuver, the irreparable happens. The doubler, located in the back seat of an unmanned taxi, is needed more for safety during the testing phase of the autopilot system and to comply with the rules put forward by the US authorities when testing such cars.
