Scientists are seriously puzzled by the problem of deliveries of fuel to Earth orbit. Currently, satellites and other spacecraft in space for quite a long time are powered by solar panels. At Roskosmos, researchers decided to find a new path. As recently stated by representatives of a state corporation, they want to build an orbiting nuclear power plant (nuclear power plant). According to them, the construction will be erected by the Russian design bureau Arsenal. According to already available data, the spacecraft will receive energy from a nuclear power station with a focused laser beam over a distance of one and a half kilometers. There is enough energy to use it for replacing solar panels, as well as in addition to them. Opinions of experts from the scientific community regarding this development were divided. Someone advocates the erection of such an object in near-earth orbit. Other analysts have criticized this initiative. According to proponents of the construction of a nuclear power plant, this venture is very promising. So it will be possible to plan the future space exploration a few steps forward. Such structures in space will significantly help to move spacecraft: not only inside the solar system, but also beyond. According to critics, funding for the construction of an orbital power station is unreasonably high. They suggest in the future to use for objects in space, solar panels and other sources of alternative energy. In addition, the idea itself is not new, as far back as 1978, the Soviet Cosmos-954 satellite with a BES-5 nuclear power plant on board fell into Canada, causing radioactive contamination of part of the North-Western territories. The accident cost the USSR $ 10 million in compensation. Fortunately, then there were no casualties. What will happen when a similar situation recurs today, we can only speculate, predicting the disappointing consequences of a possible tragedy.
