The Russian company InfoWatc, founded in 2003 by Kaspersky Lab (the head of the InfoWatc group of companies is Natalya Kasperskaya), has developed the TaigaFon smartphone, which is protected from information theft. The main client for which Taiga antispyware smartphones are designed are large companies that monitor corporate secrets and exclusive developments. TaigaFon is delivered in a software and hardware complex specially designed to protect corporate data, control smartphone operation and manage all installed applications. As emphasized by InfoWatch CEO Alexei Nagorny, one of the main corporate problems today is the loss of information, which is increasingly happening not through computers, but through mobile devices, including smartphones. Data leakage can be carried out without the participation of the owner of the smartphone, through applications installed by the manufacturer that the user does not have the right to delete. Nagorny gave an example with “one well-known brand” of smartphones. To remove a specific application, InfoWatch had to obtain administrator rights, but the manufacturer immediately, remotely blocked the use of cameras and the Android application store. To prevent such “communication” options with manufacturers, InfoWatch developed its own firmware based on the Android OS with the built-in DLP system, which provides reliable protection of information from cyber espionage. As a result, “TaigaFon” allows you to adjust the degree of protection up to a complete ban on all functions except calls. The administrator can remotely control the smartphones of employees of the corporation, prohibiting (all together or individual devices) the installation of certain applications, shooting video or photos. A ban on sending or receiving messages is possible. In addition, it became possible to track the location of the smartphone and delete all information remotely in case it was lost or stolen. The TaigaFon was developed by a joint Russian-Chinese team, which saved one more “surprise” for spies – when the camera was on or the speakerphone was turned on at the back a bright red LED lights up on the smartphone, warning others about the actions being taken from the smartphone. The TaigaFon hardware is not a unique smartphone and is an average corporate working lot Adku created for work, not for entertainment. TaigaFon received a 5-inch HD screen (1280×720 pixels), two slots for SIM cards, 16 GB of internal memory and 2 GB of RAM. The main camera is 8 megapixels, the front camera is 4 megapixels. The battery capacity is 1,900 mAh, there is a microUSB port for charging and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The cost of TaigaFon will be in the range of 12-15 thousand rubles. At the same time, experts expressed the opinion that for an individual user of this class smartphones are on the market about 8 thousand rubles. Anti-spyware protection is interesting for corporations and civil servants, among which the new TaigaFon will most likely be implemented.
