Will Samsung and LG be the manufacturers that will be the first to release a flexible smartphone in the world – the number one issue remains. On the heels of the race leaders come little-known colleagues from China, who, as it turned out, are also able to declare themselves by releasing the Koreans first serial gadget with a flexible display. And even if the device does not differ in excellent quality and reliability, the palm will forever be lost for companies that initially held the whole world in anticipation of the early production of innovative products that can be rolled up into a tube. Samsung management seems to understand the threat, which is why a prototype bendable display was demonstrated at the Samsung SID 2016 exhibition in San Francisco. The presented novelty is a 5.7-inch OLED display with a thickness of 0.3 mm, a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels and a density of 386 ppi. A 5-gram sample can be rolled into a tube approximately the diameter of a reel case for a 35 mm film. According to experts, the flexible display is not inferior to the usual in its characteristics of brightness and color reproduction. However, the question remains whether the product is ready for use in a commercial product. It is worth noting that the prototype presented is not covered with a sensor layer. In addition, in the finished gadget, the flexible display must be protected from damage by a protective screen. The company representative also did not answer the question about the number of safe folding / unfolding cycles for the display. Also, an example of a flexible 5.7-inch display with a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels, a density of 551 ppi and a brightness of 420 nits was also shown at the exhibition. Its thickness was the same 0.3 mm. True, this sample did not collapse into a tube.
